BLOG TOUR: Found by Elle Field

I'm so pleased to be part of the Found blog tour! I am a huge fan of the Arielle Lockley series by Elle Field so I was very excited to get my hands on the latest but also a little sad as it is the last. If you have missed out on this series then I seriously recommend them; Elle Field has created fantastic characters that you will be sad to leave behind. Here's the idea behind Found:

Who knew one flight could change everything? When Arielle Lockley stepped on the plane at Heathrow, she never realised how different her life would be when she touched down in New York City. Now she's dealing with that aftermath, as well as trying to find common ground with Etta, her new and unexpected business partner.
But, trying to sort out business in London whilst her fiancé, Piers, recovers from surgery in New York, is starting to take its toll on their relationship. Can Arielle and Etta work together to continue Felicity's legacy without destroying it, and will Arielle and Piers even make it down the aisle to say "I do"?

I've been wondering what was going to happen to Arielle as everything was left on a bit of a cliff hanger in the last book so I  couldn't wait to start reading Found when it landed in my mail box. Elle Field goes straight into the action, Arielle is on her way to New York as her fiance Piers has been taken ill; when she arrives she discovers that he has undergone a huge operation and will be unable to fly home for over a month. Everything in her life is in disarray, she has just lost a dear friend, discovered that she has a new and not so friendly business partner in Etta and now the man she is due to marry is hooked up to all kinds of machines in a hospital in New York. How is she going to juggle everything; she can't leave Piers in New York but she must also get her career back on track whilst grieving for one of the few people who ever believed in her. Oh and she still has a wedding to plan! 
Found was a brilliant read and I feel so fortunate to have been introduced to this series of books so that I have been able to follow Arielle's journey from the very beginning. Elle Field writes with such warmth and her books never fail to entertain. I love the fashion backdrop of the whole series,  it is so easy for Arielle to be sucked into the pretentious world that she makes a living from yet we see her battling with that and I think in Found you see a character who has grown and learnt such a lot about herself. She is a little less high maintenance in this book and you can see that she has come to recognise what's really important in life and it is not a designer handbag. 
The majority of the book takes place in New York and this gave it a slightly different feel. Arielle stays with Piers whilst he recovers and whilst it is awful that he has been so ill, it also gives them the perfect opportunity to spend quality time together without the distractions of work for both of them.
I am still gutted that the series has come to an end (but secretly hoping that Elle might write just one more) however Found was the perfect conclusion for me. Elle Field ties up any loose ends and brings everything to a close without it being too twee or perfect. I know that this is a series that I will re-read in the future and if you haven't encountered Arielle Lockley yet then I recommend that you start at the beginning and enjoy each one.

BLOG TOUR AND GIVEAWAY: B-Side by Elle Field

I am so excited to be kicking off the blog tour for B-Side by Elle Field. I have read every book by this fabulous author and she never fails to disappoint! Elle writes the brilliant Arielle Lockley series and B-Side sits between Lost which is out now and Found which will be published this Summer! Here's the idea behind the book:

"What do I honestly know about the music industry? I'm just another idiot with a dream who is naive enough to hope that I might be the next big star." Etta Millhouse has always had big musical ambitions to match her big voice, but she's also got three very big problems - the addiction she won't admit to, her godmother's illness that she can no longer ignore, and her godmother's useless business partner (who she wishes she could ignore). Keeping an eye on Arielle's poor business decisions is the last thing Etta wants to do when she's offered the chance to record a demo with a top producer. But, a promise is a promise, even if it has her reaching for another pick-me-up... And then another. And then one more. When the secret she must keep for her godmother, Felicity, sends her drug habit spiralling out of control, can Etta battle her demons in time and make her dream happen? Or, will her music career be over before it's even begun?

B-Side is very much Etta's story and I thought it was excellent. It felt a little darker and more emotional than Elle Field's other books but it was really good and showed a different side to this author's writing. Etta is Felicity's goddaughter and the closest person she has to a mother; Etta is about to get her lucky break in the music industry, she is given an opportunity to make a demo with a top producer and it looks like her hard work may finally pay off. At the same time, Felicity's health starts to go downhill but only Etta knows about this, Felicity has made her promise not to tell anyone, especially her business partner, Arielle who Etta detests. Suddenly she has too much to handle, she needs to be at her best for the record company; look after Felicity whose illness is spiralling out of control and also keep an eye on what Arielle is doing with the business that Felicity is effectively bankrolling. Etta already has a drug problem but this level of emotional stress just highlights it and soon the only way she can get through the day is by taking something or other. Those around her are not stupid, including Felicity, they beg her to get control of herself but is it too late?
Elle Field has created a brilliant character in Etta, she can be quite feisty and prickly but for some reason she is still likeable. She is a little bit lost and has been dealt some very rough cards in life and I just wanted her to do well but it feels like everything is against her. Etta's relationship with Arielle is particularly strained but hints are dropped in this book that it is unlikely they are going to be able to part ways so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.Elle Field writes withsuch a good pace, at the end of every chapter you are left feeling that you just want to read a little bit more and before you know it you have read several more chapters. B-Side being set within the world of the music industry was a nice change and I think that Elle did it very well; she explored the murky world of celebrity and how easily it can eat people like Etta up, no matter how strong and independent they are.
If you have not read this series of books then you are missing out, I don't think there is anything quite like them on the market at the moment and I am always so excited when I find out that Elle has written the next instalment!

BLOG TOUR: Lost by Elle Field

I am very excited to be part of the blog tour for Lost by Elle Field today! I loved her last book, Kept and so I was really pleased to be able to share my review with you plus Elle very kindly wrote a guest piece about her writing day which I am sure you will all enjoy! 

I currently spend half my year doing consultancy work, and half the year writing books. When it's the part of the year I'm doing consulting work, I focus on the marketing side, rather than write. When I do get to write though, I treat my day as I would if I was with clients, working the same hours. As tempting as it can be to have a lie-in, I'm always up by 8a.m. - my cat wouldn't let me sleep in, anyway, as she wants feeding!  

I spend the first few hours in the morning catching up on emails and social media stuff, as well as ticking off all the things that I would never want to usually do. It's amazing how appealing cleaning the oven can be when you have a book to write! Once I have no more distractions, I settle down to write for the day. I don't have word targets for the day - sometimes I write a mere 50 words, other days I write 5,000 words.

I write the first draft straight on to my computer - I used to write it by hand but then deciphering my awful handwriting got too hard - and I never go back and look at the first draft until it's completely finished.

Once a week I try and meet a friend for lunch in central London so I'm not stuck in the house all day. I always switch off for an hour at lunchtime when I'm at home, treating myself to an episode of something on Netflix or a few chapters of the book I'm reading. I won't read chick lit books as I don't want them to accidentally influence my book in any way - I tend to read non-fiction, crime thrillers or YA dystopian books whilst I am writing.

I'm definitely most productive after lunch, and I'll join in and do "word races" on Twitter against other authors. It's a great way to knuckle down and crank out some words. A word race is basically a competition between authors where we see who can write the most words in an hour - it's highly motivating, plus it's great to chat to other authors.

I make sure I'm finished by 6pm so I can enjoy the evenings with my boyfriend, but the last thing I do before I finish work for the day is to adjust my writing plan to make sure I'm on track. I have two documents that I work from - one is a monthly timeline that has real-life events on one side (Kept and Lost take place in 2007 and 2008, as does Geli Voyante's Hot or Not); plot points are on the other side. I also have a document which has a one-sentence outline for the next ten chapters I'm working on. This is always evolving as I find that my characters can often take me off in an unexpected direction!

I definitely prefer my writing days to my consultancy days, but the consultancy days make it possible for me to take the time off to write. As an indie author, I don't earn that much money - scarily, the median annual income of all writers in 2013 was £4,000 - but, I write for the love of it, not the money! Maybe one day I'll get to write all year round - that would be lovely!

Here's my review of Lost by Elle Field

Arielle is back! OK, she's not on her way to becoming the next Coco Chanel, her childhood dream, but she is one way step closer to running her very own shop with her business partner, Felicity. She's also planning her perfect romantic wedding to fiancé, Piers, and Arielle is starting to believe that she's finally found her place in the world... Of course life is never that straightforward. With a new-found foe interfering with her shop decisions, not to mention haughty wedding planners and loved ones facing personal struggles, will Arielle figure out what's important before all is lost? 

 Lost is the second book in the delightful Arielle Lockley chick lit series following on from the number 1 best seller, Kept which was long listed in the Best Romantic Comedy Category Spa Book Awards, 2013. 

Arielle was floundering a fair bit when we met her in the first book but it feels like she has very much found herself in this instalment. She is now Tabitha's business partner and very focused on making a success of it all. They need a new, fresh location for the shop and Arielle is feeling the pressure to find the perfect spot. Things don't go to plan though and Arielle has to overcome several obstacles in order to get the shop open. Along the way she makes new friends and acquires new pets. The one constant in her life is her fiance Piers. He supports her in everything she wants to do and she doesn't want to depend on him financially forever. They are in the middle of planning their wedding but Piers becomes quite distracted and tired; Arielle is so busy with the business that she doesn't fully take on board that Piers is not right. Just as she is getting one part of her life in order; other parts seem to be going wrong. 

Elle Field has created such a lovely character in Arielle Lockley . She could be quite easy to dislike as she seems to have it all but she is also very humble. I like that she wants to do well and prove herself. She is warm and funny and extremely loyal to those she loves.

Elle Field has written a very entertaining book with some serious undertones. The author leaves the reader on a real cliff edge at the very end which is a fantastic idea as it has made me desperate the read the next in the series. Lost is a great read within the chick lit genre and will appeal to many readers. Elle Field's writing style is witty, open and warm and I can't wait to see what she has in store for Arielle next.

Book Review: Kept By Elle Field

'Did she really just say that? I am fifteen again, except the reality is I am experiencing full paternal horror , aged twenty-five. I want to die.' Life hasn't quite worked out how Arielle Lockley imagined it would. Becoming the next Coco Chanel was always her childhood dream, but she's spent the last four years living a dizzying whirl of glitzy parties, luxurious holidays and daily shopping sprees- all paid for by boyfriend  Piers- and not doing anything to make her Coco dreams happen. When the recession hits, it's not just the economy that takes a tumble, and Arielle finds herself living back with her parents, on bad terns with Piers, and having a CV that's as welcome as a pair of knock-off Jimmy Choos. And maybe it's the location, but she's also finding unwelcome thoughts of her childhood sweetheart popping into her head... what's a girl to do? Can Arielle figure out what it is she now wants to do with her life and move on, or will she be doomed to spend the rest of her life dwelling over her worst mistakes, stuck listening to her parents embarrassing dinner table talk each night?

Kept is a brilliant debut novel from Elle Field. Arielle literally is a kept woman; she meets Piers who is happy to fund her life with his large earnings; Arielle is determined that the situation is a temporary one. But soon four years have gone by and Arielle's ambitions have not been met but she does have a well stocked wardrobe. Piers is under a huge amount of stress because of the recession so Arielle suddenly finds herself back at home with her parents, no achievements to speak of and a seriously out-of-date CV.
Kept is a classic tale of a young woman finding her way in life. Arielle has to be honest about what she wants to do with her life, there is only so much shopping she can do at the end of the day.
Whilst it is a classic plot, I found Elle Field's writing to be witty and stylish. Arielle's love life alone is enough to keep you reading the book but also I really took to this character and I was willing her to get her life and her future together.
Kept will appeal to readers of chick-lit and I felt that it had a similar feel to some of Marian Keye's ealry books. I think that Elle Field is one to watch out for and I would definitely read her next book.
