Booking Through Thursday: The Best Book You've Never Read

We’ve all seen the lists, we’ve all thought, “I should really read that someday,” but for all of us, there are still books on “The List” that we haven’t actually gotten around to reading. Even though we know they’re fabulous. Even though we know that we’ll like them. Or that we’ll learn from them. Or just that they’re supposed to be worthy. We just … haven’t gotten around to them yet.

What’s the best book that YOU haven’t read yet?

I think that I have probably said this before but I would have to say anything by Charles Dickens. Somehow I managed to do a whole degree in English Literature without reading one of his novels. I recently bought a copy of Great Expectations but it is still sitting on my book shelf. I think I worry too much about Dickens due to the many mixed opinions out there; some say he is amazing; others say his descriptions are hard going; some describe his writing as depressing where as others think that it is truly inspirational. I am reading an extremely light book at the moment as I am so tired but I think maybe it is time to give Dickens a go and then I will have my own opinion on him instead of worrying about others!

I loved Dickens until he turned up on my degree course! After that I started to dislike him more and more. I still have no idea why.

It's been a long time since I've read Dickens. I do the same thing -I tend to worry about not having the same opinion as others, but does it really matter? We all need to make our own choices.

Happy Thursday!

I haven't read a lot of Dickens either. I have a hard time forcing myself to read classics, now that I don't have a required reading list for classes or something.

Always found Dickens a bit heavy going, but my reading is influenced by my mood.

I managed to get an English Lit degree with only a very minor run-in with Dickens! :) I read a portion of A Tale of Two Cities for one class. You've inspired me -- I would love to grab that book and actually finish the story! :)

I wish you luck. I've never been able to tolerate much Dickens. I've read Great Expectations and of course A Christmas Carol. I attempted, but did not finish A Tale of Two Cities.

I have always been intimidated by Dickens but felt that I should read him at some point in my life. In February I read Oliver Twist and am so glad I finally got around to it. All of my fears were unfounded and I found that he is a great storyteller. I say jump in and give it a try...and reserve the right to put him down if he is not for you.

I enjoyed GE when I read it in high school. I had a really great English teacher that year, too. I'm sure her enthusiasm helped!

oh! I love Dickens! He's one of my favorite authors. And Great Expectations is my favorite of his books. I've read it twice, and want to read it again. :-)

My second favorite Dickens is David Copperfield
